Speaker - Frank Manley, II

Fellow Rotarian, Frank Manley spoke about Hawaiʻi Island Adult Care (HIAC), Inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the service of the elderly, frail, and mentally/physically challenged adults of the Island of Hawaiʻi since 1976 in Hilo, and 1987 in Kona.  With the capability to service up to 105 participants daily, HIAC is also the largest adult day care center in the state.  Accredited with the Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities since 2014, offers a variety of programs to enrich the mental/cognitive and physical well-being of the registered participants.  Among the activities are arts and ceramics, musical enrichment such as singing, ukulele therapy and taiko drumming, physical enrichment such as chair yoga and hula, dancing, and morning exercises, and community excursions.  Meals are also served - breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks.  Aside from the physical, mental/cognitive stimulation, the program also provides the opportunity for participants to socialize, which is extremely valuable also.

Caregivers are also encouraged to participate with a Family Respite day where caregivers can bring their loved ones for the day free of charge.  Caregivers are treated to massages, given the opportunity to take part in activities, and also learn more about their loved one's ailments and how they can be a better caregiver, as well as have time to themselves or commune with other caregivers.
