“Palaka Kalikimaka” Rotary Club of South Hilo Participates in 32nd Annual Christmas Parade

The Pāhoa Christmas Parade, affectionately themed “Palaka Kalikimaka,” named after the two-toned plaid garments that became a local uniform staple adopted by plantation workers and paniolos and subject of the “Palaka Power” revivals in the 1970s and 1980s, is a cherished event that brings the community together each holiday season. This festive celebration is not only a showcase of vibrant floats and joyous performances but also a tribute to the spirit of unity and joy. One of the highlights of the parade is the appointment of Grand Marshalls who lead the procession with grace and charm. This year, Susie Osborne, a beloved figure in the community and Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of South Hilo, was honored as one of the Grand Marshalls.  Her dedication to local causes and her infectious enthusiasm made her a fitting choice for this esteemed role.

In addition to the Grand Marshalls, various community groups participate in the parade, adding to its festive cheer. Members of the Rotary Club of South Hilo took part, exemplifying their commitment to service and community involvement. Their presence in the parade not only celebrated the season but also highlighted the spirit of giving and togetherness that defines the Rotary Club's mission. Together, participants like Susie Osborne and local organizations such as the Rotary Club of South Hilo create a parade that resonates with the warmth and joy of the holiday season.
